Pizza box sizes: which box fits a 10, 12, 14 or 16 inch pizza?
Pizza box sizes chart for 10, 12, 14 and 16 inch pizzas, with box heights, board thickness, how to measure your bake and when to go one size up.

Most pizzerias use the square box with the same number: a 10-inch pizza in a 10 x 10 box, 12 in 12 x 12, 14 in 14 x 14, 16 in 16 x 16, about 2 inches tall. That works when the baked pizza measures at or under its menu size. If yours bakes wider, go one size up.
That pairing is a rule of thumb, not a standard. The rest of this guide shows how to check it against your own pizzas before you print a few hundred boxes with your logo on them.
What size pizza box do you need for each pizza size?
Here is the usual pairing for round pizzas, with the area of each pizza so you can see how much food each size really holds. The area is plain geometry (pi times the radius squared), not a supplier figure.
| Menu size | Box to start with | Pizza area | Compared with a 12 in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 in (often "small") | 10 x 10 x 2 in | about 79 sq in | 0.7x |
| 12 in (often "medium") | 12 x 12 x 2 in | about 113 sq in | 1.0x |
| 14 in (often "large") | 14 x 14 x 2 in | about 154 sq in | 1.4x |
| 16 in (often "extra large") | 16 x 16 x 2 in | about 201 sq in | 1.8x |
| 18 in | 18 x 18 x 2 in | about 254 sq in | 2.25x |
The small, medium and large names differ from shop to shop, so always order boxes by inches, never by name. Our listed pizza box is 12 x 12 x 2 inches, priced per piece; 10, 14, 16, 18 and other sizes are printed to order through the quote form.
Why can a pizza outgrow its box?
The number on the menu is a target. The pizza that comes out of the oven can be a little larger, for a few common reasons:
- Hand-stretched dough varies from pie to pie, especially on a busy night.
- The crust rim puffs up in the oven and adds width at the edge.
- Toppings at the edge, like cheese that runs over the rim, add a little more.
Style matters too. The Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, which sets the rules for traditional Neapolitan pizza, says the pizza is "roundish, with a diameter max 35cm", with a raised edge, the cornicione, of "1-2 cm". Thirty-five centimeters is about 13.8 inches, so a pizzeria baking to that rule would usually reach for a 14-inch box, even if the menu does not call it a 14.
If the baked pizza touches all four walls, the box is too small. The lid can drag the cheese, and the pizza is hard to slide out. Going one size up costs a little more per box and saves a lot of squashed crusts.
How tall should a pizza box be?
Most standard pizza boxes are about 2 inches tall, and that is the height of our listed box. It suits thin-crust, New York-style and Neapolitan pizzas, whose height comes mostly from the crust rim.
Taller pizzas need more room. As a rule of thumb:
- Thin crust and hand-tossed: 1.5 to 2 inches.
- Thick crust, pan pizza and heavy toppings: 2 to 2.5 inches.
- Deep-dish and stuffed pizzas: measure the baked pizza in its pan and add headroom; these often need a custom height.
Measure the tallest point: a lid resting on the toppings pulls cheese off when it opens.
Does the thickness of the cardboard matter?
Yes, for two reasons: strength and how the box looks.
Most pizza boxes are corrugated board, which is two flat paper layers with a wavy layer between them. The waves are called flutes, and each flute size has a letter. The Wikipedia article on corrugated fiberboard gives E flute as 1/16 inch thick and B flute as 1/8 inch, and notes that finer flutes such as E give a smoother surface for high-resolution printing. Its article on pizza boxes says pizza boxes often use E flute, with thicker B flute also in use.
What this means when you choose:
- E flute (the board in our listed pizza box) is thin, light and prints crisply, so your logo and art look sharp. It suits most pizzas up to about 14 to 16 inches.
- B flute is thicker and stiffer. It is worth asking about for large, heavy pizzas or when boxes are stacked high in a delivery bag.
How do you measure your pizza before ordering boxes?
Measure on a normal service, not a test bake on a quiet afternoon.
- Bake three or four pizzas of each size the way your team usually makes them.
- Measure the widest point of each one, across the crust rim, after it comes off the peel.
- Measure the height at the tallest topping or the highest part of the rim.
- Take the largest numbers, not the average. If the largest 12-inch pizza measures 12.25 inches, a 12 x 12 box will be tight; think about a 13 x 13 or a 14 x 14.
- Check square and rectangle pans separately. Detroit-style and Sicilian pizzas are baked in pans, so measure the pan's outside edge and order a box to that size.
Ask whether box sizes are quoted as inside or outside dimensions, and check the size on your dieline and digital proof before you approve it. The difference is only the board's thickness, but on a pizza that already fills the box it matters.
Do you need a box for slices too?
If you sell by the slice at a counter or a food truck, a whole-pizza box is too big. Sides such as wings travel better in a separate takeout food box. A triangle pizza slice box keeps one or two slices flat and is easier to carry. Measure your slice from the tip to the outside edge of the crust; slice boxes are sized to that length.
What should you print on a pizza box?
The lid of a pizza box is the largest printed surface most restaurants own, and it sits open on a table while people eat. Most pizzerias print:
- The logo and name large on the lid.
- The phone number and website or ordering link, so the next order comes straight to you.
- The menu sizes in inches on a side panel, which answers "how big is a large?" before anyone asks.
Every order includes free digital design and dieline, and you approve a digital proof before anything prints. There is no minimum order: order 1 piece or 10,000. US shipping is a flat rate by order value: $9.99 under $100, $19.99 for $100 to $299.99 and $29.99 for $300 and up.
FAQ
What size box does a 12-inch pizza go in?
Most pizzerias use a 12 x 12 inch box about 2 inches tall. If your baked 12-inch pizza measures wider than 12 inches across the crust, or has a tall rim, use a 13 or 14 inch box instead.
Is a 16-inch pizza twice as big as a 12-inch pizza?
Close to it. A 16-inch pizza has about 201 square inches of surface and a 12-inch pizza about 113, so the 16-inch has roughly 1.8 times as much pizza.
What box fits a Neapolitan pizza?
The Neapolitan rules set a maximum diameter of 35 cm, about 13.8 inches. A 14 x 14 inch box suits a pizza at that size; measure yours, because many come out smaller.
How tall is a standard pizza box?
About 2 inches for most round pizzas. Deep-dish, stuffed and heavily topped pizzas need more height, so measure the baked pizza at its tallest point and add a little room.
Can I order pizza boxes in a custom size?
Yes. Our listed pizza box is 12 inches, and other sizes, including 10, 14 and 16 inch boxes and rectangles for pan pizzas, are quoted through the quote form.
